Il programma Erasmus+ BIP sulle minacce ambientali marine riconosciuto anche nel 2026 come attività della "Ocean Decade", l’iniziativa UNESCO per il futuro degli oceani

(English text below) Giunto alla sua quarta edizione, il Blended Intensive Programme "Marine Environmental Threats" (MET-BIP), sviluppato nel 2023 da tre Università Europee (Azzorre, Paese Basco e Pavia come capofila) e finanziato dal programma Erasmus+, continua a ottenere conferme di rappresentare un’eccellenza educativa nel panorama universitario.

Dopo essere stato segnalato nel 2024 come "buona pratica di educazione alla sostenibilità ambientale" dall’Agenzia Nazionale Erasmus INDIRE e dopo aver ottenuto nel 2025 il prestigioso riconoscimento dall’UNESCO come attività ufficialmente rilevante per il programma delle Nazioni Unite "Ocean Decade", il MET-BIP potrà tornare a fregiarsi di questo titolo anche nel 2026.

Ma in cosa consiste questo MET-BIP e cos’ha di speciale?

Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) è il nome di un formato innovativo di mobilità Erasmus+ che combina l'apprendimento online con una breve ma intensa esperienza pratica sul campo, coinvolgendo docenti e studenti di almeno tre Paesi diversi. Marine Environmental Threats, nato tra le primissime sperimentazioni di questo nuovo formato, è stato sin da subito progettato come insegnamento a libera scelta, inserito nell’offerta didattica curriculare della Laurea Magistrale dell'Università di Pavia in Conservazione della Biodiversità, Didattica e Comunicazione Scientifica. 

Rispetto a un insegnamento normale, però, MET-BIP consente ai partecipanti (studentesse e studenti delle tre Università partner) di apprendere lavorando a stretto contatto con ricercatori internazionali su problemi specifici, quali il sovrasfruttamento delle risorse ittiche, l’inquinamento, la perdita di biodiversità e il cambiamento climatico. 

MET-BIP non si limita quindi a erogare contenuti e fornire una breve esperienza internazionale, ma ambisce a diventare un incubatore di esperti motivati a lavorare su problemi urgenti. La sua forza educativa è nell’approccio multidisciplinare e collaborativo, che mette in contatto studenti e ricercatori da diverse realtà geografiche europee, e utilizza approcci didattici "orientati alla soluzione", anche stimolando l’espressione individuale tramite workshop di teatro. 

L’importanza del riconoscimento ufficiale della Ocean Decade

Formalmente denominata Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, questa monumentale iniziativa è coordinata dall'UNESCO con l’obiettivo di invertire il declino della salute degli oceani. È ormai ampiamente riconosciuto che, senza un oceano in buona salute, la vita sulla Terra non è possibile. La Ocean Decade è dunque il tentativo più ambizioso della storia per proteggerlo, una chiamata alle armi globale per il futuro del pianeta, che passa dalla salute degli oceani. 

Ottenere il riconoscimento ufficiale per due edizioni consecutive (2025 e di nuovo 2026) certifica che il programma scientifico ed educativo del MET-BIP è allineato con gli obiettivi delle Nazioni Unite e risponde a criteri di eccellenza e utilità globale.

Per le studentesse e gli studenti partecipanti a MET-BIP 2026, questo programma non sarà un qualsiasi esame universitario da registrare nel libretto, ma la conferma di aver acquisito competenze di rilevanza strategica per le Nazioni Unite.

The Erasmus+ BIP program on marine environmental threats recognized again in 2026 as an activity of the ‘Ocean Decade’, the UNESCO initiative for the future of the oceans

Now in its fourth edition, the Blended Intensive Program ‘Marine Environmental Threats’ (MET-BIP), developed in 2023 by three European universities (Azores, Basque Country, and Pavia as lead partner) and funded by the Erasmus+ program, continues to be recognized as an example of educational excellence in the university landscape.

After being recognized in 2024 as a ‘good practice in environmental sustainability education’ by the Italian Erasmus National Agency INDIRE, and after obtaining prestigious endorsement from UNESCO in 2025 as an officially recognized activity in the United Nations ‘Ocean Decade’ program, the MET-BIP has been able to obtain this title again in 2026.

But what is MET-BIP and what makes it so special?

Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) is the name of an innovative Erasmus+ mobility format that combines online learning with a short but intense practical field experience, involving teachers and students from at least three different countries. 'Marine Environmental Threats', one of the very first experiments with this new format, was immediately designed as an elective course, included in the curriculum of the UNIPV Master's Degree in Biodiversity Conservation, Education, and Scientific Communication. 

Compared to normal teaching, however, MET-BIP allows participants (students from the three partner universities) to learn by working together with international researchers on specific problems, such as the overexploitation of fish stocks, pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change. 

MET-BIP is therefore not limited to delivering content and providing a brief international experience, but aims to become an incubator for experts who will work directly on urgent problems. Its educational strength lies in its multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, which brings together students and researchers from different geographical areas of Europe and uses ‘solution-oriented’ teaching approaches, including stimulating individual expression through theater workshops.

The Significance of the Ocean Decade Endorsement 

Formally named the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, this monumental initiative is coordinated by UNESCO with the aim of reversing the decline in ocean health. It is now widely recognized that without a healthy ocean, life on Earth is not possible. The Ocean Decade is therefore the most ambitious attempt in history to protect it, a global call to arms for the future of the planet, which depends on the health of the oceans. 

Obtaining official recognition for two consecutive editions (2025 and again in 2026) certifies that the MET-BIP scientific and educational program is aligned with the objectives of the United Nations and meets criteria of excellence and global utility.

For students participating in MET-BIP 2026, this program will not be just another university exam to record in their transcript, but confirmation that they have acquired skills of strategic importance to the United Nations.
