Costruire “Città e comunità sostenibili”: l’esperienza di Maya e Julia, neolaureate del Joint Master EC2U
(English below) Un’esperienza intensa e memorabile. Così Maya Moussallieh e Julia Seppa descrivono il Joint Master in Sustainable Cities and Communities. A fine settembre si sono laureate con ottimo esito all’Università di Pavia - in corso di accreditamento - scelta come ultima tappa del percorso promosso dall’Alleanza EC2U (European Campus of City-Universities).
Ispirato all’Obiettivo dell’Agenda 2030 “Città e Comunità Sostenibili” (SDG #11), il programma offre la possibilità di vivere quattro contesti accademici e culturali in soli due anni, favorendo la crescita personale, la formazione interdisciplinare e una spiccata dimensione internazionale.
A poche settimane dalla discussione della tesi, le studentesse ripercorrono sfide e traguardi raggiunti nelle università di Coimbra (Portogallo), Turku (Finlandia) e Poitiers (Francia). Con loro, i compagni di corso Juan Pablo Meléndez, Chandramohan Aisvaran, Anas Mendili, Eduardo Grisales e Diana Jimenez Fajardo, prossimi alla conclusione del loro percorso. Insieme hanno sviluppato conoscenze e competenze per costruire città e comunità più sostenibili, trovando in ognuna delle tappe attraversate un luogo da poter chiamare casa.
MAYA: «Un’esperienza memorabile»
«È stata un’esperienza memorabile», racconta Maya. La scelta di iscriversi a questo master EC2U risponde al desiderio di approfondire le tematiche legate alla sostenibilità e aprire la strada al mondo accademico. Il suo percorso inizia a Damasco - città natale - con una laurea in Architettura, che la porta a Toronto (Canada) dove lavora nel campo della progettazione di edifici multifunzionali a uso misto.
«Sustainable Cities and Communities mi ha offerto la possibilità di vivere più città e università all’interno di un unico percorso di studi», racconta. «Oltre all’arricchimento personale, mi ha offerto spunti interessanti su come migliorare il rapporto tra le università e i territori che le ospitano».
Sostenibilità e mobilità studentesca sono temi estremamente connessi, che richiedono una riflessione e progettazione adeguata.
«In città universitarie come Pavia, Coimbra, Turku e Poitiers, gli studenti rappresentano una parte significativa della popolazione. L’esperienza di mobilità fatta con il master mi ha portata a riflettere su come rendere questa esperienza più sostenibile, partendo da pratiche come riuso e riciclo, fino alla progettazione di campus universitari, alloggi e servizi. In qualità di architetto, mi piacerebbe contribuire a migliorare questa esperienza».
Il prossimo passo sarà un percorso di dottorato presso il Dipartimento di Architettura (DICAr), con cui ha sviluppato la tesi.
JULIA: «Mi sento a casa in quattro città europee»
Per Julia Seppa, originaria di Oulu (Finlandia), la decisione di iscriversi all’EC2U Joint Master in Sustainable Cities and Communities è arrivata dopo la laurea triennale in Interior Architecture, ottenuta in Germania.
«Ero molto interessata ai temi della sostenibilità - racconta - volevo proseguire gli studi in questo campo per ampliare le mie prospettive». Come Maya, ha scelto UniPv per completare il percorso di studi, con una tesi sulla dimensione sociale e culturale della sostenibilità nell’architettura.
«Mi è piaciuto affrontare le cose da una prospettiva più ampia, seguendo corsi e tematiche che hanno ampliato i miei interessi e la mia apertura verso il mondo. Il contesto in cui si studia influisce molto: a Coimbra ero inserita nel Dipartimento di Ingegneria, mentre qui a Pavia in quello di Architettura. Questo comporta la necessità di adattarsi a nuovi ambienti e approcci». Dopo la laurea, Julia prevede di trascorrere un periodo a Torino: «Vorrei contribuire al cambiamento nel campo dell’architettura e della sostenibilità, probabilmente al di fuori dell’ambito accademico».
Se dovesse riassumere l’intera esperienza di joint master in una parola, sarebbe “tapahtumarikas”: «In finlandese significa movimentato, ricco di eventi», spiega. «In questi due anni sono successe tantissime cose: ho conosciuto molti amici e il mio attuale partner, ho affrontato imprevisti e difficoltà, ho collezionato ricordi meravigliosi che ancora porto con me. Ora mi sento a casa in quattro città europee».

Building ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’: the experience of Maya and Julia, graduates of the EC2U Joint Master
An intense and memorable experience. This is how Maya Moussallieh and Julia Seppa describe the EC2U Joint Master “Sustainable Cities and Communities”. At the end of September, they graduated with excellent results from the University of Pavia, chosen as the final stage of a journey promoted by the EC2U Alliance (European Campus of City-Universities). Inspired by the 2030 UN Agenda Goal “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDG #11), the program offers the opportunity to experience four different academic and cultural contexts in two years, fostering personal growth, interdisciplinary education and a deeply international dimension.
Just a few weeks after defending their theses, the students look back on the challenges and achievements they encountered at the Universities of Coimbra (Portugal), Turku (Finland), and Poitiers (France). Alongside them are their classmates Juan Pablo Meléndez, Chandramohan Aisvaran, Anas Mendili, Eduardo Grisales, and Diana Jimenez Fajardo, who are nearing the completion of their academic journey. Together, they have developed the knowledge and skills needed to build more sustainable cities and communities, finding in each stage of their journey a place they could call home.
MAYA: «A Memorable Experience»
«It was a memorable experience», says Maya Moussallieh. Her decision to enroll in this EC2U master’s program stemmed from a desire to deepen her understanding of sustainability-related issues and to pave the way toward an academic career. Her journey began in Damascus, her hometown, where she earned a degree in Architecture, before moving to Toronto (Canada) to work in the field of mixed-use and multifunctional building design.
«The EC2U Joint Master Sustainable Cities and Communities offered me the opportunity to experience multiple cities and universities within a single study program», she explains. «Beyond personal growth, it provided valuable insights into how to strengthen the relationship between universities and the territories that host them».
Sustainability and student mobility are closely interconnected themes that call for thoughtful reflection and design. «In university cities like Pavia, Coimbra, Turku, and Poitiers, students make up a significant part of the population. The mobility experience offered by this master’s program made me think about how to make this lifestyle more sustainable, from practices such as reuse and recycling to the design of university campuses, student housing, and services. As an architect, I would like to contribute improving this experience». Her next step will be a PhD program at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAr) in UNIPV, where she also developed her thesis.
JULIA: «I can call four different cities ‘home’»
For her classmate Julia Seppa, originally from Oulu (Finland), the decision to enroll in the EC2U Joint Master’s Degree in Sustainable Cities and Communities came after earning her Bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture in Germany. «I was very interested in sustainability issues”, she says. «I wanted to continue my studies in this field to broaden my perspectives». Like Maya, she chose the University of Pavia (UNIPV) to complete her academic journey, writing a thesis on the social and cultural dimensions of sustainability in architecture.
«I enjoyed approaching things from a broader perspective, taking courses and exploring topics that expanded my interests and my openness to the world. The study environment makes a big difference: in Coimbra, I was part of the Department of Engineering, while here in Pavia, I’m in the Department of Architecture. This requires adapting to new environments and approaches». After graduation, Julia plans to spend some time in Turin: «I’d like to contribute to change in the field of architecture and sustainability, probably outside the academic world».
If she had to sum up her entire joint master’s experience in one word, it would be tapahtumarikas: «In Finnish, it means eventful, full of experiences», she explains. «So many things have happened over these two years: I’ve made many friends and met my current partner, I’ve faced challenges, and I’ve collected wonderful memories that I carry with me. Now I feel at home in four European cities».
