Valentina Bello, ricercatrice del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale e dell’Informazione, vince un HFSP Early Career Research Grant per un progetto di ricerca all’intersezione tra fotonica e botanica
(English below) La dott.ssa Valentina Bello, ricercatrice presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale e dell’Informazione dell'Università di Pavia, è risultata vincitrice, in qualità di Co-Principal Investigator, dell’HFSP Award 2026, aggiudicandosi un prestigioso Early Career Research Grant.
Il progetto, dal titolo “Light-harvesting strategies from the forest floor: mapping the photonic morphospace of shade plants”, è finanziato dallo Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP), uno dei programmi scientifici più competitivi a livello globale, che promuove ricerca di base altamente interdisciplinare e caratterizzata da collaborazioni intercontinentali. Il finanziamento, pari a 900.000 dollari complessivi su tre anni per il consorzio di ricerca, consentirà lo sviluppo di attività innovative alla frontiera tra discipline diverse.
L’attività di ricerca sarà sviluppata in collaborazione con la Principal Investigator, Dott.ssa Aleca Borsuk, Assistant Curator presso il New York Botanical Garden, e si propone di indagare le strategie adottate dalle piante che vivono nel sottobosco di foreste montane e tropicali per ottimizzare la cattura della luce in condizioni di scarsa luminosità. Il progetto combina tecniche di fotonica e intelligenza artificiale con competenze di botanica, con l’obiettivo di chiarire i principi evolutivi alla base dell’efficienza fotosintetica in ambienti ombrosi.
Il finanziamento è stato assegnato al termine di una competizione altamente selettiva: all’edizione 2026 dell’HFSP Award sono stati presentati 1.121 progetti di ricerca, dei quali solo 44 sono stati finanziati. I progetti selezionati coinvolgono ricercatori provenienti da 31 Paesi, confermando l’elevata competitività e la dimensione internazionale del bando.

Dr. Valentina Bello, Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Pavia, has been awarded an HFSP Award 2026 as Co-Principal Investigator, receiving a prestigious Early Career Research Grant.
The project, entitled “Light-harvesting strategies from the forest floor: mapping the photonic morphospace of shade plants”, is funded by the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP), one of the most competitive funding schemes worldwide, supporting intercontinental and highly interdisciplinary research. The grant, amounting to a total of 900.000 dollars over three years for the research consortium, will support the development of innovative activities at the intersection of multiple disciplines.
The research will be carried out in collaboration with Principal Investigator Dr. Aleca Borsuk, Assistant Curator at the New York Botanical Garden, and aims to investigate the strategies adopted by plants living in montane and tropical forest understories to optimize light harvesting in conditions of low illumination. The project combines photonics and artificial intelligence techniques with plant science, with the goal of elucidating the evolutionary principles underlying photosynthetic efficiency in shaded environments.
The funding was awarded following a highly competitive selection process: 1121 research proposals were submitted to the 2026 HFSP Award call, of which only 44 were funded. The selected projects involve researchers from 31 countries, highlighting the highly competitive and international nature of the call.
