«Vogliamo dare un segno di speranza»: una coppia dona 25mila euro per finanziare due borse destinate a studenti palestinesi
(English below) «Finanziare le borse IUPALS ci è sembrato un modo concreto per dare un segno di speranza per il futuro del popolo palestinese».
Con queste parole, una coppia bergamasca ha donato all’Università di Pavia una somma di 25 mila euro, destinata alle iniziative accademiche a sostegno della Palestina. Tra queste, vi è anche il progetto “Italian Universities for Palestinian Students” (IUPALS) promosso dalla Conferenza Rettori delle Università Italiane (CRUI). Nel mese di novembre - in concomitanza con i primi corridoi universitari aperti tra Palestina e Italia - i coniugi hanno contattato il Rettore UniPv Alessandro Reali, manifestando il desiderio di contribuire al finanziamento di una borsa di studio.
Con il loro benestare, la generosa donazione è stata suddivisa in due quote, offrendo a due studenti – anziché uno – l’opportunità di raggiungere un ambiente sicuro e riprendere il proprio percorso formativo. Così ripartiti, i fondi copriranno l’alloggio e parte delle spese vive.
Le borse donate dalla coppia sono già state assegnate a due dei quattro giovani palestinesi accolti a Pavia il 26 novembre 2025, con l’ultima evacuazione da Gaza. I nuovi arrivati frequenteranno i corsi di laurea magistrale in lingua inglese “Computer Engineering” ed “Economics, Development and Innovation”. Anche per loro, questa nuova esperienza accademica rappresenta l’opportunità di riprendere gli studi in un ambiente sicuro, lontano da guerre e precarietà economica.
Il Rettore: “Un gesto generoso per restituire speranza”
«Come abbiamo ricordato in occasione dell’arrivo dei primi studenti palestinesi a Pavia - dichiara il Rettore Alessandro Reali - un valore assolutamente fondamentale per l’università è la libertà: di insegnamento, di ricerca, di pensiero, di parola e di confronto, sempre nel rispetto reciproco. Istituzioni e comunità condividono una responsabilità sociale verso ciò che accade attorno a noi. L’educazione dà la possibilità di trasformare impegno e solidarietà in gesti concreti. Non possiamo che ringraziare i donatori di questa doppia borsa di studio per il loro gesto generoso e significativo, che supera confini geografici e culturali per restituire ciò che di più prezioso esiste: la speranza. In Europa come in Palestina, c’è bisogno di giovani preparati, capaci di contribuire alla ricostruzione mettendo a frutto conoscenze e competenze maturate anche grazie a programmi di mobilità, di cooperazione e di solidarietà internazionale. IUPALS rientra tra questi e UniPv rinnova il proprio impegno, che racchiude il senso più profondo della nostra missione accademica».
UniPv lancia il crowdfunding
A questo proposito, alcuni docenti dell’Università di Pavia hanno proposto di organizzare una campagna di crowdfunding a sostegno degli studenti palestinesi iscritti all’Università di Pavia. Ospitata dalla piattaforma Universitiamo di UNIPV, l’iniziativa “A bridge for the Future: Support UNIPV Scolarships for Palestinian Students” è organizzata dall’Area Ricerca e Terza Missione in collaborazione con il Center for Global Strategic Engagement (GLOBEC). Le donazioni - raccolte tramite piattaforma PagoPA - saranno destinate al finanziamento di borse per studenti palestinesi.
«L’obiettivo è offrire a giovani palestinesi l’opportunità di completare la propria formazione in Italia, in modo che possano contribuire alla ricostruzione del proprio Paese e allo sviluppo della comunità, su scala locale e globale». Come ricorda Matteo Alvaro, Prorettore agli Affari Internazionali UniPv, «L’educazione è un potente strumento di pace, in grado di aprire strade, costruire ponti e un futuro migliore del presente che conosciamo».
«We want to send a message of hope»: a couple donates €25,000 to fund two scholarships for Palestinian students
«We felt that funding the IUPALS scholarships was a concrete way to send a message of hope for the future of the Palestinian people.» With these words, a couple from Bergamo donated €25,000 to the University of Pavia to support academic initiatives in favour of Palestine. Among these is the Italian Universities for Palestinian Students (IUPALS) project, promoted by the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI).
In November – at the same time as the opening of the first academic corridors between Palestine and Italy – the couple contacted UniPv Rector Alessandro Reali to express their wish to contribute to the funding of a scholarship. With their consent, the generous donation was divided into two parts, allowing two students – instead of one – to reach a safe environment and resume their studies. The funds will cover accommodation and part of the students’ living expenses.
The two scholarships donated by the couple have already been awarded to two of the four young Palestinian students welcomed to Pavia on 26 November 2025, following the latest evacuation from Gaza. The new arrivals will attend the English-taught Master’s degree programmes in Computer Engineering and Economics, Development and Innovation. For them as well, this new academic experience represents an opportunity to continue their education in a safe environment, away from war and economic instability.
The Rector: “A generous gesture that restores hope”
«As we recalled on the occasion of the arrival of the first Palestinian students in Pavia,» says Rector Alessandro Reali, «a fundamental value for the university is freedom: freedom of teaching, research, thought, speech and dialogue, always based on mutual respect. Institutions and communities share a social responsibility for what happens around us. Education makes it possible to turn commitment and solidarity into concrete actions. We can only thank the donors of these two scholarships for their generous and meaningful gesture, which transcends geographical and cultural borders to restore what is most precious of all: hope. In Europe as well as in Palestine, there is a need for well-prepared young people who can contribute to reconstruction by putting to good use the knowledge and skills acquired also through mobility programmes, cooperation and international solidarity. IUPALS is part of this effort, and UniPv renews its commitment, which embodies the deepest meaning of our academic mission».
UniPv launches a crowdfunding campaign
In this context, several faculty members of the University of Pavia have proposed organising a crowdfunding campaign to support Palestinian students enrolled at UNIPV. Hosted on the University’s Universitiamo platform, the initiative “A Bridge for the Future: Support UNIPV Scholarships for Palestinian Students” is organised by the Research and Third Mission Area in collaboration with the Center for Global Strategic Engagement (GLOBEC). The fundraising campaign has been launched on Saturday, 13 December 2025, during the event “Waiting for Christmas at the University”, taking place in the historic lecture halls of the main campus (Corso Strada Nuova 65). Donations, collected via the PagoPA platform, will be used to fund scholarships for Palestinian students.
«The goal is to offer young Palestinians the opportunity to complete their education in Italy, so that they can contribute to the reconstruction of their country and to the development of their community, at both local and global level.» As recalled by Matteo Alvaro, UniPv Vice-Rector for International Affairs, «Education is a powerful instrument of peace, capable of opening paths, building bridges and creating a future better than the present we know».
