Oltre le migrazioni: a Pavia la conferenza finale del progetto MARE apre il confronto internazionale su mobilità umana e sociale nella storia contemporanea del Mediterraneo
(English below) Il Mediterraneo, come spazio di interazione culturale e migrazione umana, ha prodotto nel corso della storia una intensa circolazione culturale tra le diverse regioni che si affacciano sullo stesso mare. Come sono cambiate nel corso della storia contemporanea queste dinamiche? Cosa hanno prodotto in termini di incontri culturali? Come la mobilità sociale è stata e continua a essere alla base delle dinamiche migratorie? In quale dimensione politica si iscrivono queste traiettorie di cambiamento? Soprattutto, come le relazioni e il partenariato universitario possono incidere positivamente su queste dinamiche di cambiamento?
A queste domande ha risposto la conferenza “Beyond Migrations: People and Human Mobilities Across Contemporary Mediterranean History”, organizzata il 2 e 3 marzo 2026 all’Università di Pavia nell’ambito del progetto Mediterranean Alliance for Research and Education (MARE) in partenariato con le Università Sidi Mohamed ben Abdallah di Fes e Hassan II di Casablanca (marocco), Tunis al Manar e l'Università di Sfax (Tunisia) e le tre università di Zakho, Halabja e Duhok nella regione autonoma del Kurdistan iracheno.
Entrato nella sua fase operativa nella primavera del 2025, il progetto MARE è coordinato dall’Università di Palermo. Pavia ha il compito di promuovere il partenariato universitario internazionale, la mobilità e lo scambio di conoscenze con atenei in Marocco, Tunisia e Kurdistan iracheno. L’obiettivo? Contribuire alla creazione di cittadini consapevoli e attivi nel rafforzamento dei legami sociali e culturali tra i Paesi coinvolti valorizzando la docenza e la ricerca congiunta.
Migrazioni, storia e complessità
Finanziato dal PNRR – TNE attraverso il fondo NextGenerationEU, il progetto coinvolge 11 università italiane – tra cui Pavia – e più di 40 atenei partner provenienti da 10 Paesi della regione del Mediterraneo meridionale, oltre a Mauritania e Iraq. I finanziamenti sono destinati a promuovere la mobilità di studenti e docenti, attività di insegnamento e la creazione di gruppi di ricerca transnazionali tra università italiane e atenei dei Paesi partner. Capofila del Work Package 2 – “History, society and cultural circulation in the Mediterranean” – e co-coordinatrice del Work Package 3 – “Migration, social and political change”, l’Università di Pavia ha ospitato la conferenza conclusiva delle attività svolte.
Con la conferenza conclusiva del progetto MARE a Pavia, il nostro Ateneo ha coniugato un momento di ricerca in dialogo tra docenti provenienti da diverse università del Mediterraneo con la pratica di mobilità di ricerca che hanno costituito nei mesi precedenti la raccolta delle fonti e dei dati per le presentazioni congiunte.
Il progetto MARE ha inoltre avuto un ruolo fondamentale nel finanziare e incrementare le mobilità per studenti pavesi e marocchini, nell’ambito del titolo di doppia laurea tra i corsi magistrali in Studi dell’Africa e dell’Asia (Pavia) e Moroccan Cultural Studies (Fes).
Il lavoro prosegue: le attività di ricerca sviluppate all’interno del WP2 saranno raccolte in una pubblicazione, per sintetizzare i risultati del lavoro svolto finora e ampliare ulteriormente la riflessione e la prospettiva per attività future all’interno in particolare della doppia laurea tra Pavia e Fes. Con le università in Kurdistan, Pavia si propone invece di approfondire un partenariato inteso a promuovere la cultura e gli studi sulla pace, a partire dalla storia della violenza e dei massacri che ancora segnano la società del nord iracheno.

Beyond Migrations: Pavia Hosts the MARE Project Final Conference, Launching an International Dialogue on Mediterranean Mobility
The Mediterranean, as a space of cultural interaction and human migration, has historically generated intense cultural circulation among the regions bordering the same sea. How have these dynamics changed throughout contemporary history? What kinds of cultural encounters have they produced? How has social mobility shaped—and how does it continue to shape—migration dynamics? Within which political frameworks do these trajectories of change unfold? And, above all, how can university relations and partnerships positively influence these processes of transformation?
These questions were addressed during the conference “Beyond Migrations: People and Human Mobilities Across Contemporary Mediterranean History”, held on 2–3 March 2026 at the University of Pavia within the framework of the Mediterranean Alliance for Research and Education (MARE) project, in partnership with Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah University of Fez and Hassan II University of Casablanca (Morocco), Tunis El Manar University and the University of Sfax (Tunisia), and the universities of Zakho, Halabja and Duhok in the autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
Entering its operational phase in spring 2025, the MARE project is coordinated by the University of Palermo. The University of Pavia is responsible for promoting international university partnerships, mobility and knowledge exchange with universities in Morocco, Tunisia and Iraqi Kurdistan. The aim is to contribute to the creation of informed and active citizens, strengthening social and cultural ties among the countries involved through joint teaching and research activities.
Migration, history and complexity
Funded by the PNRR – TNE programme through the NextGenerationEU fund, the project involves 11 Italian universities - including Pavia - and more than 40 partner institutions from 10 countries in the Southern Mediterranean region, as well as Mauritania and Iraq. The funding supports student and staff mobility, teaching activities and the creation of transnational research groups between Italian universities and partner institutions.
As leader of Work Package 2 – “History, Society and Cultural Circulation in the Mediterranean” – and co-coordinator of Work Package 3 – “Migration, Social and Political Change”, the University of Pavia hosted the final conference of the activities carried out within the project.
With the MARE project’s final conference in Pavia, the university combined a moment of academic dialogue among scholars from different Mediterranean institutions with the research mobility activities that, in previous months, enabled the collection of sources and data for the joint presentations.
The MARE project has also played a key role in funding and increasing mobility opportunities for Pavia and Moroccan students, within the framework of the double degree programme between the Master’s programmes in African and Asian Studies (Pavia) and Moroccan Cultural Studies (Fez).
The work continues: the research activities developed within WP2 will be collected in a publication, aimed at summarising the results achieved so far and further expanding reflection and future initiatives, particularly within the double degree programme between Pavia and Fez.
With the universities in Kurdistan, the University of Pavia also aims to deepen a partnership focused on promoting culture and peace studies, starting from the historical legacy of violence and massacres that still mark the society of northern Iraq today.
