“European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact”: all’Università di Pavia due nuove laureate per il Joint Master dell’Alleanza EC2U
(English below) «Kiitos è una delle prime parole che ho imparato in Finlandia. Significa ‘grazie’, con questa parola voglio concludere il percorso di studio e di vita che mi ha portata qui. Grazie alle persone incontrate in questi due anni, ho vissuto tutto con serenità». Genny Copes, neolaureata dell’Università di Pavia in “European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact”, racconta così l’esperienza di laurea magistrale congiunta promossa dall’Alleanza europea EC2U (European campus of City Universities), che unisce nove atenei a vocazione multidisciplinare e internazionale.
Tra questi c’è Pavia, dove quest’estate ha concluso a pieni voti il percorso di studi biennale, con una tesi su “Il linguaggio giovanile in Italia e Spagna: uno studio sociolinguistico basato sulla serie televisiva Skam”.
Con lei Elizabeth Mumby, compagna di corso, ha discusso in lingua italiana la tesi su “Il femminismo e l'etimologia in contatto: la storia della parola donna nelle lingue europee”.
Entrambe hanno ottenuto 110 con lode e un titolo di studio riconosciuto in tutti i Paesi scelti per completare il percorso accademico.
Quest’autunno, “European Languages Cultures and Societies in contact” accoglierà la quarta coorte di studenti: per l’anno accademico 2025/2026 sono 30 le candidature ricevute per la sola Università di Pavia, dove attualmente sono stati ammessi 16 studenti.
Un titolo di studio che apre al mondo
Ispirato all’Obiettivo di Sviluppo sostenibile “Educazione di qualità” (SDG #4) dell’Agenda 2030 delle Nazioni Unite, il corso di laurea magistrale “European Languages, Cultures and Societies in contact” è in capo al Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici, in collaborazione con i dipartimenti di Scienze Politiche e Sociali, Ingegneria Industriale e dell’Informazione e di Matematica. Ogni semestre, gli studenti hanno l’opportunità di scegliere un’università diversa tra gli atenei partner di EC2U, per acquisire una conoscenza approfondita del contesto linguistico e del panorama socio-culturale europeo, utilizzando metodi di ricerca accademica avanzati. Oltre all’apprendimento delle lingue europee, il plus di questo percorso è la possibilità di costruire il proprio piano di studi “à la carte”, scegliendo i corsi preferiti tra le opzioni fornite da ciascuna università. Le mobilità sono finanziate da borse di studio Erasmus+ e da fondi dell’Alleanza EC2U.
Genny: «Un corso fatto apposta per me»
Genny ha scelto European Languages dopo la laurea triennale in Lingue e Culture Moderne all’Università di Pavia, conclusa con l’Erasmus ad Almería (Spagna). «Quell’esperienza mi ha portata a cercare una magistrale che mi permettesse di studiare in diverse parti del mondo. Così ho trovato questo corso internazionale, sembrava fatto apposta per me».
Il suo percorso magistrale si è svolto tra Pavia, Salamanca (Spagna) e Turku (Finlandia): «Vivere e ambientarmi in culture totalmente diverse è ciò che più ho amato». Il futuro è ancora da scrivere: oggi Genny lavora a Milano in un ufficio commerciale estero, ma ha già iniziato un master in export management per continuare su questa strada. «Con me, porto la consapevolezza di aver ampliato i miei orizzonti - commenta - Spesso ci sentiamo dire di uscire dalla propria zona di comfort e fare esperienze internazionali: questo corso di laurea lo permette davvero».
Elizabeth: «Un'esperienza immersiva»
«È stata un’esperienza immersiva», racconta Elizabeth Mumby, che dopo la laurea triennale in Modern Language Studies ottenuta nel Regno Unito ha trascorso un anno all’estero tra Salamanca e Bologna. «Questa mobilità mi ha spinto a cercare qualcosa di simile per la magistrale. Spostarmi in un paese diverso e studiare in una nuova università ogni sei mesi mi ha permesso di capire il vero significato di ‘lingue, culture e società in contatto’. Condividere questo percorso con altri studenti internazionali, conoscere i loro background e tradizioni, ha reso ancora più profonda e significativa questa esperienza interculturale».
Le sfide non sono mancate: «Ho imparato a destreggiarmi tra burocrazia, permessi di soggiorno e differenze tra sistemi universitari», prosegue la studentessa, che giunta al termine del percorso traccia un bilancio positivo: «Ho maturato una conoscenza ampia e variegata delle arti europee nel corso della storia. Mi ha fatto scoprire un tema che voglio continuare ad approfondire». Per il futuro, Elizabeth spera di trasformare la propria tesi nel punto di partenza per un progetto di dottorato e continuare la ricerca nell’ambito dell’etimologia e della linguistica femminista.

L’alleanza universitaria europea EC2U mira a promuovere percorsi di apprendimento, ricerca e mobilità su scala europea. “European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact”: at the University of Pavia two new graduates of the EC2U Alliance Joint Master’s Degree
Genny and Elizabeth share their intercultural experience across three different European universities, earning a degree recognized in all the countries they studied in.
«Kiitos is one of the first words I learnt in Finland. It means ‘thank you’. With this word I want to conclude the journey of study and life that brought me here: I’m grateful to the people I met during these two years, I was able to live everything with serenity.» This is how Genny Copes, fresh graduate from the University of Pavia in European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact, described her experience in the joint master’s degree program promoted by the EC2U European Alliance (European Campus of City Universities), which unites nine multidisciplinary and international universities.
Among them is Pavia, where this summer she completed her two-year program defending a thesis on “Youth language in Italy and Spain: a sociolinguistic study based on the TV series Skam”.
Alongside, her coursemate Elizabeth Mumby defended her thesis - in Italian language - on “Feminism and etymology in contact: the history of the word ‘woman’ in European languages”. Both graduated with honors (110 cum laude), they obtained a degree recognized in all the countries where they completed their academic path.
This autumn, European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact will welcome its fourth cohort of students: for the 2025/2026 academic year, 30 applications were received for the University of Pavia alone, with 16 students admitted so far.
A degree that opens up the world
Inspired by the UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goal #4 (Quality Education), the master’s program European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact is run by the Department of Humanities, in collaboration with the Departments of Political and Social Sciences, Industrial and Information Engineering, and Mathematics.
Each semester, students have the opportunity to choose a different university among EC2U’s partner institutions, gaining an in-depth understanding of the linguistic and socio-cultural landscape of Europe, while applying advanced academic research methods. Beyond the study of European languages, the program’s added value lies in the possibility of creating a personalized study plan, selecting preferred courses from the options offered at each university. Mobility is funded through Erasmus+ scholarships and by EC2U Alliance funds.
Genny: "A program made for me"
After her bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Pavia, completed with an Erasmus experience in Almería (Spain), Genny chose the European Languages program. «I was looking for a master’s program that would allow me to study in different parts of the world. That’s how I found this international course, which seemed tailored for me». Her master’s journey took her to Pavia, Salamanca (Spain), and Turku (Finland): «Living and adapting to completely different cultures is what I loved the most».
Today, Genny works in Milan in a foreign trade office but has already started a master’s in export management to continue along this path. «II broadened my horizons - she says - We are often told to step out of our comfort zone and have international experiences: this degree really makes it possible».
Elizabeth: "An immersive experience"
«It was an immersive experience» says Elizabeth Mumby. After her bachelor’s degree in Modern Language Studies in the UK, she spent a year abroad between Salamanca and Bologna. «That mobility inspired me to look for something similar for my master’s. Moving to a different country and studying at a new university every six months allowed me to truly understand the meaning of ‘languages, cultures and societies in contact.’ I learned to navigate bureaucracy, residence permits, and the differences between university systems. Sharing this journey with other international students, learning about their backgrounds and traditions, made this intercultural experience even deeper and more meaningful». Reflecting on her path, she shares a positive outlook: «I developed a broad and varied knowledge of European arts throughout history. It also led me to discover a theme I want to explore further». For the future, Elizabeth hopes to transform her thesis into a doctoral project and continue her research in feminist linguistics and etymology.
