EAIE 2026

Europa: alleanze e nuove frontiere

EAIE 2026 -2

One week in the “Rhythm of Revolution”. This was the theme of EAIE 2026, the international European conference dedicated to higher education, held in Glasgow from 8 to 11 September. The 36th edition brought together more than 7,300 people - institutional representatives, academics, university staff and professionals - from more than 100 countries, for four days dedicated to learning, networking and developing new collaborations.

The University of Pavia was also among the participants, with a delegation from the International Relations area comprising Chantal Riccardi and Marco Oliva (International Mobility Unit), Elena Fontana and Olena Filippova (Marketing and Recruitment Unit), Lidia Gallanti (GLOBEC - EC2U), Giorgia Mazzanti and Claudia Scannapieco (Admissions Unit).

As part of the rich programme of events focusing on the present and future of higher education, colleagues Chantal Riccardi and Marco Oliva respectively took part in the panels “A mental health transformation in student mobility” and “From Evidence to Action: Advancing diversity and inclusion in Erasmus+ mobility”, bringing UNIPV’s experience as a starting point for discussion and reflection with international colleagues.

Closer to the United Kingdom through Erasmus+

Among the key themes of the conference was the return of the United Kingdom and Switzerland to the Erasmus+ programme from 2027, bringing the “Erasmus family” to 35 countries. The prospect of a new phase of university cooperation between Europe and the United Kingdom was also at the heart of the Italy–UK University Partnership Day, held in London on 7 September, on the eve of EAIE. Being in Scotland therefore provided an opportunity for UNIPV to meet with three leading British universities: the University of Birmingham, UCL and the University of Bath, represented by its International Relations Office.

Europe: alliances and new frontiers

European alliances - including EC2U - also found at EAIE a valuable space to meet partner universities and colleagues from other university networks, present their activities and exchange views on the prospects of the European Universities Initiative. This dimension of internationalisation goes beyond individual agreements between universities: it means building stable networks, developing joint projects and creating new opportunities for mobility, education and collaboration for the entire university community.

Relations beyond Europe

The Asian front was particularly dynamic. The delegation focused on Japan, meeting with Hokkaido University and Nihon University to explore research opportunities; on CHA University in South Korea, given its strong biomedical focus; and on Universiti Putra Malaysia, building on the prospects for cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region opened up through APAIE 2026 and new partnerships with Malaysia.

In South Africa, contacts were established with Stellenbosch University and the University of the Western Cape, key reference points for cooperation with the African continent. Potential partners in the Middle East included Beirut Arab University and Lebanese American University.

In Central America, the delegation met with Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, while in Chile contacts were developed with Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana, O'Higgins and Universidad de Chile, in view of the future Italy–Chile University Consortium, designed to strengthen mobility, joint research, double degrees and international project development.

Supporting internationalisation

Among the stakeholders were also a number of service providers supporting internationalisation, particularly in the areas of qualification verification and language certification, which are becoming increasingly central to the management of international student flows.

Year after year, EAIE confirms itself as a strategic opportunity to consolidate existing relationships, build new partnerships and engage with an international community in constant transformation. Or revolution, to echo the theme of this year’s edition. The next appointment will be in Lisbon in 2027.
