EC2U, tra presente e futuro. A Pavia una giornata per fare il punto sul sfide e prospettive dell’Alleanza Europea
(English below) Cinque anni di Alleanza EC2U e un futuro tutto da scrivere, partendo dalle comunità locali. Il 12 febbraio 2026 nell’Aula Bottigella di Università di Pavia si è svolto “EC2U Present & Future”. Un workshop pensato per riunire la comunità accademica, presentare i nuovi componenti dei gruppi di lavoro e fare il punto sui primi cinque anni dell’Alleanza EC2U, delineando insieme gli sviluppi strategici per il prossimo futuro. Docenti, ricercatori, personale amministrativo, partner associati e studenti si sono confrontati su ciò che l’Alleanza ha costruito finora e sulle prospettive che la attendono.
La mattinata si è aperta con una sessione introduttiva per ripercorrere il cammino delle Alleanze Europee, dalla European Universities Initiative alla nascita di EC2U e di reti transnazionali che vanno oltre la sfera accademica, per sperimentare nuovi modelli di didattica, ricerca congiunta, mobilità e coinvolgimento dei rispettivi territori.
La seconda parte dell’incontro ha offerto una panoramica sullo “stato dell’arte”, per riflettere su quanto costruito nei cinque anni di EC2U e sul valore aggiunto generato dalla cooperazione multilaterale. Tra le attività più significative: lo sviluppo dei Virtual Institutes, pensati per mettere in rete competenze e gruppi di ricerca su temi strategici e trasversali, lo sviluppo dei Joint Masters, frutto dell’integrazione accademica tra gli atenei partner, per finire con l’attività dei Partner Associati e le rispettive ricadute territoriali.
Guardando avanti: il futuro dell’Alleanza EC2U
Durante la sessione conclusiva, i partecipanti hanno lavorato insieme per delineare direzioni, priorità e obiettivi in vista del “bridge” funding period 2027–2029. Il confronto ha assunto un’importanza particolare in preparazione dello Strategic Meeting di Bruxelles - in programma il 25 e 26 febbraio 2026 - in cui saranno discusse le linee strategiche per l’evoluzione dell’Alleanza. Nel corso del workshop i partecipanti sono stati invitati a confrontarsi su quattro aree strategiche, con l’obiettivo di individuare ciò che ha funzionato e raccogliere nuove idee per il futuro.
Sul fronte Strategy & Governance è stata riconosciuta la solida sinergia costruita negli anni, con l’intenzione di coinvolgere maggiormente i dipartimenti e potenziare la diffusione delle opportunità all’interno della comunità accademica. Tra le proposte, l'evoluzione di EC2U in legal entity, la creazione di opportunità sovranazionali condivise, lo sviluppo di strumenti di intelligenza artificiale per il mondo universitario e la nascita di nuove “academies” in collaborazione con i Partner Associati.
In tema di Education & Mobility, molto è stato fatto per garantire flessibilità ai Joint Master, rafforzare legami con le comunità locali e incoraggiare la collaborazione tra i diversi gruppi di lavoro, sostenuta dal progresso nella digitalizzazione. Per il futuro, si punta a valorizzare l’offerta online, integrare i sistemi IT, offrire più opportunità di mobilità per ricercatori tra i diversi atenei dell’Alleanza. Tra le proposte, l’apertura di “mobility windows” anche per corsi non EC2U e nuovi servizi di supporto – psicologico e non – per gli studenti dell’Alleanza.
Sul tema Research & Innovation, è emersa la necessità di una migliore disseminazione dei risultati all’interno delle comunità accademiche locali, accademiche e non. Tra le nuove opportunità: potenziare i seed grants per iniziative congiunte, migliorare il matchmaking tra gruppi di ricerca e coordinare in modo più efficace i research offices, sfruttando la forza del consorzio per partecipare ai bandi Horizon Europe.
In tema di Community Engagement, è emerso quanto sia importante intensificare il dialogo con le realtà del territorio, coinvolgendo maggiormente associazioni e le scuole di ogni ordine e grado. Non solo: la community EC2U potrebbe estendersi anche oltre i confini comunitari, agganciando partner internazionali extra-UE.
“EC2U Present & Future” ha confermato il valore di ritrovarsi, condividere i risultati raggiunti e tracciare una rotta condivisa per il futuro delle Alleanze europee e dell’Istruzione superiore.
EC2U between present and future: a workshop in Pavia on the challenges and opportunities of the European Alliance
Five years of the EC2U Alliance and a future still to be written, starting from local communities. On 12 February 2026, in the Bottigella Hall of the University of Pavia, the event “EC2U Present & Future” took place: a workshop designed to bring together the academic community, introduce the new members of the working groups, and take stock of the first five years of the EC2U Alliance, jointly outlining strategic developments for the near future. Faculty members, researchers, administrative staff, associate partners and students discussed what the Alliance has built so far and the prospects ahead.
The morning opened with a session retracing the path of the European Alliances, from the European Universities Initiative to the creation of EC2U and the development of transnational networks that go beyond the academic sphere, experimenting with new models of teaching, joint research, mobility and territorial engagement.
The second part of the meeting offered an overview of the current situation, reflecting on what has been achieved in EC2U’s first five years and on the added value generated through multilateral cooperation. Among the most significant achievements are the creation of the Virtual Institutes, which connect expertise and research groups on strategic and cross-cutting themes; the development of Joint Masters, born from the academic integration among partner universities; and the contribution of the Associate Partners, with their impact on local communities.
Looking Ahead: The Future of the EC2U Alliance
During the final session, participants worked together to outline directions, priorities and objectives for the 2027–2029 bridge funding period. The discussion gained particular relevance in preparation for the Strategic Meeting in Brussels – scheduled for 25 and 26 February 2026 – where the strategic lines for the evolution of the Alliance will be addressed. Throughout the workshop, participants were invited to focus on four strategic areas, with the aim of identifying what has worked well and gathering new ideas for the future.
On Strategy & Governance, the strong synergy built over the years was widely acknowledged, along with the intention to involve departments more deeply and to strengthen the dissemination of opportunities within the academic community. Among the proposals: the evolution of EC2U into a legal entity, the creation of shared supranational opportunities, the development of artificial intelligence tools for higher education, and the launch of new “academies” in collaboration with Associate Partners.
Regarding Education & Mobility, much progress has been made in ensuring flexibility within the Joint Masters, reinforcing connections with local communities and encouraging collaboration among the various working groups, supported by advancements in digitalisation. Looking ahead, the aim is to enhance the online offer, integrate IT systems, and provide more mobility opportunities for researchers across the Alliance. Proposals include opening mobility windows also for non-EC2U courses and offering new support services – psychological and otherwise – for EC2U students.
On Research & Innovation, the need for better dissemination of results within local academic and non-academic communities emerged as a priority. New opportunities include strengthening seed grants for joint initiatives, improving matchmaking between research groups, and better coordinating research offices by leveraging the consortium’s strengths to participate in Horizon Europe calls.
In the area of Community Engagement, participants highlighted the importance of intensifying dialogue with local stakeholders and more actively involving associations and schools at all levels. The EC2U community could also extend beyond EU borders, engaging non-EU international partners.
“EC2U Present & Future” confirmed the value of coming together, sharing results, and jointly charting a course for the future of European Alliances and higher education.
