EC2U Forum 2026: anche l’Università di Pavia a Turku per dare forma al futuro dell’educazione superiore in Europa
(English below) Dieci università e città europee unite per “Disegnare il futuro dei giovani europei attraverso un’educazione di qualità”. È questo il tema del decimo EC2U Forum, evento annuale internazionale promosso dall’alleanza universitaria European Campus of City-Universities (EC2U). Dal 18 al 21 maggio, l’edizione 2026 ha riunito nella città di Turku (Finlandia) oltre 500 partecipanti, con l’obiettivo di rafforzare i legami tra atenei e città partner e valorizzare il ruolo dell’istruzione di qualità come motore di una cittadinanza attiva e di un’Europa più coesa.
L’Università di Pavia è stata rappresentata da una delegazione di 46 persone tra studenti, docenti e ricercatori, personale amministrativo e partner associati. Tra questi, il Comune di Pavia, rappresentato dal sindaco Michele Lissia e dalla referente dell’Ufficio Europa Maria Spitti, il Polo Tecnologico di Pavia con il presidente Tommaso Mazzocchi, Dario Pettenon per Assolombarda, il professore Marco Lenti per l’IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, il professore Stefano Ramat e il ricercatore Roberto Soldi per CUS Pavia, cui si aggiungono i rappresentanti delle associazioni studentesche STEP ESN e AIESEC.
Disegnare il futuro dell’educazione superiore
Incontri, sessioni scientifiche, tavole rotonde, eventi di networking e sfide dedicate all’innovazione hanno caratterizzato l’edizione di quest’anno, confermando l’impegno nel rafforzare EC2U e il ruolo delle Alleanze europee. Una risorsa strategica per il futuro dell’istruzione superiore, in cui università e città contribuiscono ad affrontare le sfide globali della società. Non sono mancate attività dedicate agli studenti - oltre 100 giovani provenienti da 10 diversi paesi - chiamati a cimentarsi in una “challenge” ispirata al tema del Forum 2026. Divisi in gruppi internazionali, hanno realizzato poster sui temi del Forum, presentati durante la sessione “Voice of Students” insieme a docenti, staff e stakeholder.
Come sottolinea il Prorettore agli Affari Internazionali dell’Università di Pavia, Matteo Alvaro, «il Forum EC2U rappresenta il risultato concreto di un percorso avviato nel 2020 e cresciuto nel tempo grazie a una visione condivisa che porta il nostro Ateneo e la città di Pavia in una dimensione sempre più europea. Non si parla solo di progetti, ma di collaborazioni, opportunità di specializzazione e ricerca congiunta, in cui la mobilità internazionale - in continua crescita - crea connessioni reali tra persone, competenze e percorsi. Con un obiettivo comune: costruire un’università sempre più aperta e internazionale».
L’alleanza cresce: verso nuove sfide
L’Alleanza EC2U riunisce le Università di Pavia (Italia), Poitiers (Francia), Coimbra (Portogallo), Jena (Germania), Iași (Romania), Salamanca (Spagna), Turku (Finlandia), Linz (Austria) e Umeå (Svezia), cui si aggiunge Leopoli (Ucraina) in qualità di partner associato. Insieme lavorano per costruire uno spazio universitario europeo aperto, inclusivo e innovativo. Una visione che trova conferma anche nella dimensione e nell’impatto raggiunti dall’Alleanza. Lo dimostrano i numeri: 20mila componenti dello staff accademico, 12mila docenti e ricercatori, 250mila studenti e oltre 60 partner associati nei diversi territori, per una comunità che abbraccia quasi 4 milioni di cittadini.
Lo scorso aprile, le attività in corso e i risultati raggiunti sono stati presentati all’Agenzia esecutiva europea per l'Istruzione e la Cultura (EACEA) per valutarne l’impatto locale, gli sviluppi futuri e le prospettive dell’Alleanza. Il prossimo passo sarà la richiesta di un nuovo finanziamento per il periodo 2027–2029, al quale le università partner stanno già lavorando, anche in vista di una prospettiva di più lungo periodo orientata al consolidamento delle attività di EC2U nel quadro del prossimo programma settennale della Commissione europea 2028-2034.

EC2U Forum 2026: the University of Pavia in Turku to shape the future of higher education in Europe
Ten European universities and cities united to “Shape the Future of Young Europeans through Quality Education”. This was the theme of the tenth EC2U Forum, the annual international event promoted by the European Campus of City-Universities (EC2U) Alliance. From 18 to 21 May, the 2026 edition brought together more than 500 participants in the city of Turku (Finland), with the aim of strengthening ties between partner universities and cities and enhancing the role of quality education as a driver of active citizenship and a more cohesive Europe.
The University of Pavia was represented by a delegation of 46 people, including students, professors and researchers, administrative staff, and associated partners. Among them were the Municipality of Pavia, represented by the Mayor Michele Lissia and Maria Spitti from the Europe Office, the Polo Tecnologico di Pavia with its President Tommaso Mazzocchi, Dario Pettenon for Assolombarda, Professor Marco Lenti for the IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo; Professor Stefano Ramat and researcher Roberto Soldi for CUS Pavia; together with representatives of the student associations STEP ESN and AIESEC.
Shaping the Future of Higher Education
Meetings, scientific sessions, round tables, networking events, and innovation challenges characterised this year’s edition, confirming the commitment to strengthening EC2U and the role of the European Alliances as a strategic resource for the future of higher education, where universities and cities contribute together to addressing the global challenges facing society.
There was also a strong focus on student activities, involving more than 100 young participants from 10 different countries, who took part in a challenge inspired by the theme of the 2026 Forum. Divided into international groups, the students created posters on the Forum topics, which were presented during the “Voice of Students” session alongside professors, staff members, and stakeholders.
As highlighted by the Vice-Rector for International Affairs of the University of Pavia, Matteo Alvaro, «the EC2U Forum represents the concrete result of a journey that began in 2020 and has grown over time thanks to a shared vision that places our University and the city of Pavia in an increasingly European dimension. This is not only about projects, but also about collaborations, opportunities for specialisation, and joint research, where international mobility - constantly growing - creates real connections between people, skills, and academic paths. With one common goal: building a university that is increasingly open and international.»
The Alliance Grows: Towards New Challenges
The EC2U Alliance brings together the Universities of Pavia (Italy), Poitiers (France), Coimbra (Portugal), Jena (Germany), Iași (Romania), Salamanca (Spain), Turku (Finland), Linz (Austria), and Umeå (Sweden), together with Lviv (Ukraine) as an associated partner. Together, they work to build an open, inclusive, and innovative European university space.
This vision is also reflected in the scale and impact achieved by the Alliance. The figures speak for themselves: 20,000 academic staff members, 12,000 professors and researchers, 250,000 students, and more than 60 associated partners across the different territories, for a community that reaches nearly 4 million citizens.
Last April, the ongoing activities and achieved results were presented to the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) in order to assess their local impact, future developments, and the Alliance’s prospects. The next step will be the application for new funding for the 2027–2029 period, on which the partner universities are already working, also with a longer-term perspective aimed at consolidating EC2U activities within the framework of the next seven-year European Commission programme for 2028–2034.
