Dalle “radici” al “futuro”: UniPv racconta l’attività dell’Alleanza EC2U tra sfide e prospettive per la futura università europea
(English below) Come riassumere l’Alleanza EC2U in una parola? Partendo da questa domanda, l’Università di Pavia ha voluto tracciare un bilancio del percorso finora svolto e rilanciare le sfide future di un’iniziativa europea che collega nove atenei, città e comunità locali. L’evento - svolto il 15 luglio 2025 - ha coinvolto studenti, staff e partner associati, con un esercizio semplice solo in apparenza: ciascun partecipante ha scelto una parola per sintetizzare la propria esperienza con EC2U, dando così forma a un vocabolario comune fatto di percorsi intrecciati, visioni e obiettivi concreti.
«Challenging», afferma Antonella Forlino, Prorettrice all’Internazionalizzazione, che ha ricordato le sfide affrontate e il lavoro svolto in sinergia con i colleghi delle altre università: dall’avvio del terzo Virtual Institute “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” al relativo Joint Master, fino alla promozione della digitalizzazione e del coinvolgimento dei partner associati.
Tra i partecipanti, anche il Comune di Pavia, che ha scelto "L.I.N.K." come parola chiave. «È l’acronimo di Local Initiatives for Networking and Knowledge», spiega l’assessora Alessandra Fuccillo, presente con Maria Spitti ed Elisa Preti (Ufficio Europa) per portare i saluti del Sindaco Michele Lissia. Secondo Fuccillo, iniziative come il Forum di Coimbra sono fondamentali proprio per questo: creare connessioni. «È importante confrontarsi con le altre città e avviare progetti comuni, come Défi-Pavia, che permetterà a giovani pavesi di scoprire Poitiers attraverso un viaggio all’insegna della sostenibilità. Stiamo inoltre lavorando a un progetto artistico itinerante, ispirato a un’idea vista proprio a Coimbra: immaginare le città come persone, coinvolgendo artisti locali in residenze e scambi tra le città dell’Alleanza».
"Sinergia" è la parola scelta da Dario Pettenon, referente di Assolombarda, per sottolineare il valore della cooperazione tra università, istituzioni e imprese. Un concetto che si intreccia con quello di "network", richiamato da Roberto Soldi in rappresentanza del CUS Pavia, partner attivo nella creazione di una rete europea dedicata allo sport. Proprio lo sport sarà al centro del prossimo Student Event, che porterà a Pavia 80 studenti provenienti dalle nove città dell’Alleanza EC2U, inclusa Lviv (Ucraina), in qualità di Partner Associato.
Per Khaled Alorabi, presidente di ST.E.P. ESN Pavia, l’esperienza EC2U ha messo in luce un grande "potenziale", ancora in parte da esplorare e valorizzare, soprattutto per chi sta costruendo il proprio percorso accademico e personale. Non a caso, "studenti" è la parola scelta da Stefano Ramat (WP2 - Inclusive, Engaged and Mobile EC2U Community), per ricordare chi sono i veri protagonisti dell’Alleanza: giovani che, attraverso scambi, attività e progetti comuni, trovano nuove occasioni di crescita dentro e fuori dall’università. Proprio pensando a loro, Michela Cobelli (WP2 - Mobility subgroup) sceglie la parola "radici", a esprimere quel legame profondo tra identità locale e apertura internazionale, elemento chiave per una mobilità davvero formativa. Un concetto che si intreccia con quello di "resilienza", indicato da Luigi Santangelo (WP3 - Digital EC2U Alliance): la capacità di andare avanti insieme, anche nei momenti più complessi, trovando nella comunità e nella collaborazione la forza per continuare.
"Formazione" e "ricerca" sono i pilastri su cui si fonda l’Alleanza, come sottolineano Giacomo Vigezzi (WP4 - Good Health and Well-being) e Costanza Marini (WP5 - Quality Education), che vedono in EC2U uno spazio reale di crescita condivisa. A questi concetti si collega "integrazione", la parola scelta da Marco Morandotti (WP6 - Sustainable Cities and Communities), intesa come risultato di un processo consapevole, costruito attraverso collaborazione e impegno comune. Nella stessa direzione va "unità", proposta da Matteo Alvaro (WP8 – Doctoral Training), che richiama la necessità di unire forze e intenti per sviluppare progetti congiunti tra gli atenei partner. Il professor Pietro Carretta, leader del sottogruppo WP8 dedicato al Long Life Learning, ha invece scelto la parola "acqua", simbolo della conoscenza come risorsa essenziale per affrontare le trasformazioni rapide della contemporaneità. A chiudere, Luca Cavone (WP9 - Innovation hub) ha proposto "inn-trepreneurship", il punto d’incontro tra innovazione e spirito imprenditoriale, direttamente connesso al "futuro" (WP7 - Peace, Justice and strong Institutions).
«Con queste parole avete colto l’essenza e l’essenziale dell’Alleanza EC2U», afferma in chiusura la Prorettrice all’Internazionalizzazione Antonella Forlino. «Il mio ringraziamento va a tutti per il lavoro investito in questo percorso condiviso, in cui ogni contributo è fondamentale. Non si tratta di un semplice progetto, ma è la futura università europea. Siamo di fronte a un cambiamento epocale nel sistema educativo europeo, e ne siamo parte».

From “roots” to “future”: UniPv shares the EC2U Alliance’s journey, between challenges and prospects for the university of tomorrow
How can the EC2U Alliance be summed up in one word? Starting from this question, the University of Pavia set out to reflect on the journey taken so far and to look ahead to the future challenges of a European initiative that connects nine universities, cities, and local communities. The event - held on July 15th, 2025 - brought together students, staff, and associated partners in an exercise that was only seemingly simple: each participant was asked to choose a single word to describe their EC2U experience, creating a shared vocabulary shaped by interwoven paths, visions, and concrete goals.
«Challenging», said Antonella Forlino, Vice-Rector for International Relations, who recalled the challenges faced and the work carried out in synergy with colleagues from other universities: from the launch of the third Virtual Institute “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” and its related Joint Master’s programme, to the promotion of digitalization and the engagement of associated partners.
Among the participants was also the Municipality of Pavia, choosing “L.I.N.K.” as its key word. «It stands for Local Initiatives for Networking and Knowledge,» explained Councillor Alessandra Fuccillo, who attended together with Maria Spitti and Elisa Preti (Europe Office) to convey greetings from Mayor Michele Lissia. According to Fuccillo, initiatives such as the Coimbra Forum are essential precisely for this reason: creating connections. «It’s important to engage with other cities and launch joint projects, such as Défi-Pavia, which will allow young people from Pavia to discover Poitiers through a journey focused on sustainability. We’re also working on an itinerant art project, inspired by an idea seen in Coimbra: imagining cities as people, involving local artists in residencies and exchanges among the Alliance cities.»
“Synergy” is the word chosen by Dario Pettenon, representative of Assolombarda, to highlight the value of cooperation between universities, institutions, and businesses. A concept that resonates with “network,” the word brought forward by Roberto Soldi on behalf of CUS Pavia, an active partner in the creation of a European sports network. Sport will in fact be the core of the next Student Event, which will bring to Pavia 80 students from the nine EC2U cities, including Lviv (Ukraine), an Associated Partner.
For Khaled Alorabi, president of ST.E.P. ESN Pavia, the EC2U experience revealed great “potential”, still partly to be explored and enhanced — especially for those building their academic and personal journey. Unsurprisingly, “students” was the word chosen by Stefano Ramat (WP2 – Inclusive, Engaged and Mobile EC2U Community), to emphasize who the true protagonists of the Alliance are: young people who, through exchanges, activities and shared projects, find new opportunities for growth both within and beyond the university. With them in mind, Michela Cobelli (WP2 – Mobility Subgroup) chose the word “roots”, to express the deep connection between local identity and international openness — a key element for truly meaningful mobility. A concept that ties into “resilience”, highlighted by Luigi Santangelo (WP3 – Digital EC2U Alliance): the ability to move forward together, even in the most complex moments, drawing strength from community and collaboration.
“Education” and “research” are the pillars of the Alliance, as underlined by Giacomo Vigezzi (WP4 – Good Health and Well-being) and Costanza Marini (WP5 – Quality Education), who see in EC2U a real space for shared growth. These ideas connect with “integration”, the word chosen by Marco Morandotti (WP6 – Sustainable Cities and Communities), understood as the outcome of a conscious process built through collaboration and joint commitment. In the same direction goes “unity”, proposed by Matteo Alvaro (WP8 – Doctoral Training), which recalls the need to join forces and intentions to develop joint projects among partner universities. Professor Pietro Carretta, leader of the WP8 subgroup on Lifelong Learning, instead chose the word “water”, a symbol of knowledge as an essential resource to face the rapid transformations of the present. To close, Luca Cavone (WP9 – Innovation Hub) proposed “inn-trepreneurship”, the meeting point between innovation and entrepreneurship, directly linked to the word “future” (WP7 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
«With these words, you have captured the essence and the essentials of the EC2U Alliance,» said Vice-Rector Antonella Forlino in conclusion. «My sincere thanks to everyone for the work invested in this shared journey, where every contribution matters. This is not just a project — it is the university of the future. We are witnessing a historic transformation in the European education system, and we are part of it».
