La biblioteca beethoveniana di Lewis Lockwood donata al Dipartimento di Musicologia e Beni Culturali di Cremona è ora disponibile
(English below) Presso la Biblioteca del Dipartimento di Musicologia e Beni Culturali dell'Università di Pavia è ormai disponibile il fondo generosamente donato da Lewis Lockwood nel 2022.
Il celebre studioso statunitense ha infatti deciso di devolvere al Dipartimento di Cremona l’intera porzione della sua biblioteca privata dedicata a Beethoven, formatasi nei tanti anni di ricerche incentrate sul compositore tedesco.
Noto per i suoi lavori sulla musica rinascimentale e beethoveniana, finalista al Premio Pulitzer con il suo Beethoven: the Music and the Life (2003), presidente dell’American Musicological Society dal 1987 al 1988, attivo presso le Università di Princeton e Harvard, nel 2018 è stato nominato membro onorario della Beethoven-Haus Verein di Bonn e insignito, con Margaret Bent, del Premio Guido Adler della Società internazionale di musicologia (IMS). Lockwood è oggi professore emerito (Fanny Peabody Research Professor) di Harvard e Distinguished Senior Scholar presso il Dipartimento di Musicologia ed Etnomusicologia della Boston University, di cui co-dirige, insieme a Jeremy Yudkin, il Center for Beethoven Research.
Il Fondo Lockwood – di cui è responsabile la prof.ssa Federica Rovelli, che è anche Research Assistent del prof. Lockwood a Harvard – è composto da circa 370 titoli, inventariati e dunque disponibili al prestito e alla consultazione a scaffale come richiesto dallo studioso stesso.
Come sottolineato dal prof. Lockwood recentemente: «Questa donazione è pensata in primo luogo per sostenere la ricerca su Beethoven da parte di studiosi e studenti dell'Università di Pavia-Cremona. Riflette anche la mia personale esperienza in Italia, che non è solo quella di un turista, dato che ho iniziato il mio lavoro di storico della musica a Roma, molti anni fa, mentre completavo la mia tesi di laurea sulla musica del periodo controriformista. Successivamente sono tornato per condurre uno studio sulla vita musicale e sul mecenatismo nella Ferrara degli Estensi, tra il XV e l'inizio del XVI secolo. Il mio interesse per Beethoven, che si data a più di cinquant'anni fa, mi ha permesso di collegare il mio lavoro di studioso con la mia esperienza di violoncellista, che si dedica ancora attivamente alla musica da camera beethoveniana. Spero che questa donazione possa contribuire in piccola parte al futuro degli studi su Beethoven in Italia».
Lewis Lockwood's Beethoven library donated to the Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage in Cremona is now available
The Library of the Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage of the University of Pavia is now home to the collection generously donated by Lewis Lockwood in 2022.
In fact, the famous American scholar has decided to donate to the Department of Cremona the entirety of his private library dedicated to Beethoven, built up over many years of research on the German composer.
Renowned for his research on Renaissance music and Beethoven, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his book Beethoven: the Music and the Life (2003), president of the American Musicological Society from 1987 to 1988, professor at Princeton and Harvard Universities, he was made an honorary member of the Beethoven-Haus Verein in Bonn in 2018 and, together with Margaret Bent, was awarded the Guido Adler Prize of the International Musicological Society (IMS). Lockwood is now Professor Emeritus (Fanny Peabody Research Professor) at Harvard University and Distinguished Senior Scholar in the Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology at Boston University, where he co-directs the Center for Beethoven Research with Jeremy Yudkin.
The Lockwood Collection - curated by Prof. Federica Rovelli, who is also a research assistant to Prof. Lockwood at Harvard - consists of some 370 titles, which have been inventoried and are therefore available for loan and shelf consultation at the scholar's request.
As Prof. Lockwood has recently written, «The main motivation for this gift is to support research on Beethoven by scholars and students at the University in Pavia-Cremona. It also reflects my personal experience of being more than a visitor in Italy, as I began my work in music history in Rome many years ago to complete my dissertation on music and the Counter-Reformation; and returned in later years to carry out a documented study of musical life and patronage at Ferrara under the Estensi in the 15th and early 16th centuries. My turn to Beethoven, begun more than fifty years ago, enabled me to connect my scholarly work with my life experience as a cellist, playing his chamber music, as I still do. I hope this donation may contribute in a small way to the future of Beethoven studies in Italy».
