Nulla è neutro: bias, linguaggio e cultura al centro della conferenza internazionale EC2U a Pavia
(English below) Le parole che usiamo, i testi che leggiamo e le tecnologie che utilizziamo influenzano - spesso in modo invisibile - il nostro modo di vedere il mondo. È questo il punto di partenza di “Dealing with Biases in Language and Culture: Interdisciplinary Perspectives”, conferenza internazionale in programma dall’1 al 3 settembre 2026 all’Università di Pavia. Quarantacinque ricercatrici e ricercatori provenienti da tutta Europa si confronteranno sul ruolo dei bias culturali, cognitivi e linguistici nella comunicazione, nell’educazione, nelle pratiche professionali e nei sistemi digitali.
Organizzata nell’ambito del Virtual Institute for Quality Education (VIQE) dell’Alleanza EC2U, la conferenza propone un confronto interdisciplinare che mette in dialogo linguistica, psicologia, scienze sociali, diritto e studi culturali. I contributi dei numerosi speaker affronteranno la presenza dei bias nei testi e nel linguaggio quotidiano, analizzando in particolare i marker linguistici sintattici e pragmatici, gli stereotipi e i pregiudizi nei contesti educativi e le nuove sfide poste dall’Intelligenza Artificiale e dal Natural Language Processing.
La prima giornata - martedì 1 settembre - sarà dedicata a scoprire "Come il linguaggio e la tecnologia costruiscono bias", e si terrà nell’Aula VII Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università (sede centrale, Corso Strada Nuova 65). Mercoledì 2 e giovedì 3 settembre la conferenza si terrà in Aula Weber (via Luino 12), dove si parlerà di "Come il potere utilizza i bias: politica, guerra" e "Come cultura e educazione possono riconoscere e trasformare i bias".
La conferenza sarà l'occasione per mettere a confronto competenze e prospettive diverse, contribuendo a costruire un approccio critico e consapevole nei confronti dei bias che permeano il linguaggio, la cultura e i sistemi tecnologici con cui interagiamo ogni giorno.

Nothing is neutral: bias, language and culture take centre stage at the EC2U international conference in Pavia - 1st-3rd September
The words we use, the texts we read and the technologies we rely on shape - often invisibly - the way we see the world. This is the starting point of "Dealing with Biases in Language and Culture: Interdisciplinary Perspectives", an international conference taking place from 1 to 3 September 2026 at the University of Pavia. Forty-five researchers from across Europe will come together to explore the role of cultural, cognitive and linguistic biases in communication, education, professional practice and digital systems.
Organised within the Virtual Institute for Quality Education (VIQE) of the EC2U Alliance, the conference brings together an interdisciplinary dialogue spanning linguistics, psychology, social sciences, law and cultural studies. Contributions from a wide range of speakers will address the presence of bias in texts and everyday language, with a particular focus on syntactic and pragmatic linguistic markers, stereotypes and prejudice in educational contexts, and the new challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing.
The first day - Tuesday 1 September - will be dedicated to exploring "How language and technology construct bias", and will be held in Aula VII, Faculty of Arts and Humanities (main campus, Corso Strada Nuova 65). On Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 September, the conference moves to Aula Weber (Via Luino 12), where sessions will focus on "How power uses bias: politics and war" and "How culture and education can recognise and transform bias".
The conference will be an opportunity to bring together diverse expertise and perspectives, contributing to a critical and informed approach to the biases that permeate the language, culture and technological systems we engage with every day.
