Il neuroscienziato di fama internazionale James Bower ospite del laboratorio di Neurofisiologia del Dipartimento di Scienze del Sistema Nervoso e del Comportamento UniPv
(English below) Il Prof. James Bower, ospite del laboratorio di Neurofisiologia del Dipartimento di Scienze del Sistema Nervoso e del Comportamento dell'Università di Pavia, terrà due interventi il 13 e il 14 ottobre 2025.
Lunedì 13 ottobre 2025, alle ore 18:00, presso l’Almo Collegio Borromeo, il Prof. Bower terrà la Lectio Magistralis “How does the history of science tell us we should proceed to understand the relationship between the structure and the function of the nervous system?”.
In tale occasione, il Prof. Bower riceverà il Casella Prize 2025. Il Casella Prize, istituito dall’Almo Collegio Borromeo di Pavia in memoria del professor Cesare Casella, ex alunno scomparso nel 2014, già direttore dell’Istituto di Fisiologia dell’Università di Pavia e presidente del Consiglio di amministrazione del Collegio, verrà introdotto dal professor Egidio D’Angelo, ordinario di Fisiologia al Dipartimento di Scienze del Sistema Nervoso e del Comportamento dell’Università di Pavia.

Il prof. James Mason Bower è un neuroscienziato di fama internazionale, pioniere nel campo delle neuroscienze computazionali, con una carriera accademica che include incarichi prestigiosi al Caltech e all’Università del Texas. La sua ricerca si concentra sulla comprensione delle relazioni tra struttura e funzione nel cervello, in particolare nel sistema olfattivo e nel cervelletto. È stato tra i primi a sviluppare modelli neuronali realistici e ha creato la piattaforma GENESIS utilizzata per la simulazione delle funzioni cerebrali. Oltre alla ricerca, ha promosso l’educazione scientifica fondando Whyville.net, un mondo virtuale educativo con milioni di utenti. Ad oggi è professore della Southern Oregon University, dove insegna in corsi interdisciplinari legati alle neuroscienze.

Prof. James Bower, guest of the Neurophysiology laboratory of the Department of Nervous System and Behavioural Sciences, will give two talks on October 13th and 14th, 2025.
On Monday October 13th, 2025 at 6:00 pm in Collegio Borromeo, Prof. Bower will hold the Lectio Magistralis “How does the history of science tell us we should proceed to understand the relationship between the structure and the function of the nervous system?”.
On this occasion, Prof. Bower will receive the Casella Prize 2025. The Casella Prize, established by the Almo Collegio Borromeo of Pavia in memory of Professor Cesare Casella, a former student who passed away in 2014, former director of the Institute of Physiology of the University of Pavia and president of the Board of Directors of the College, will be introduced by Professor Egidio D'Angelo, full professor of Physiology at the Department of Nervous System and Behavioural Sciences of the University of Pavia.

Prof. James Mason Bower is an internationally renowned neuroscientist, pioneering in the field of computational neuroscience, with an academic career that includes prestigious appointments at Caltech and the University of Texas. His research focuses on understanding the relationships between structure and function in the brain, particularly in the olfactory system and cerebellum. He was among the first to develop realistic neuronal models and created the GENESIS platform used for the simulation of brain functions. In addition to research, he promoted science education by founding Whyville.net, an educational virtual world with millions of users. To date, he is a professor at Southern Oregon University, where he teaches interdisciplinary courses related to neuroscience.
