“Architecture and Labor: ideology” Keynote Lecture della Prof.ssa Peggy Deamer (USA)

(English below) Il 22 marzo 2024, nell'aula H3 della Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università di Pavia, con inizio alle ore 15:00, sarà offerta agli studenti dell'Università di Pavia la Keynote Lecture tenuta dalla Prof.ssa Peggy Deamer, laureata in Architettura presso The Cooper Union e dottorata presso l'Università di Princeton. Attualmente è Professoressa Emerita presso la Scuola di Architettura di Yale University e principale dello studio professionale Deamer Architects.

Peggy Deamer è stata nominata Visiting Professor nel quadro del programma di scambio UniPv-USA per l'anno accademico 2023-2024. La sua attività didattica contribuirà al modulo "Design Studio in Architecture and Ecologies", rivolto agli studenti del quinto anno del corso di Ingegneria delle Costruzioni e Architettura EU, insieme ai Professori Carlo Berizzi e Ioanni Delsante.

Il modulo mira a fornire agli studenti competenze avanzate in progettazione architettonica e urbana. La Prof.ssa Deamer contribuirà specificamente a focalizzare la potenzialità della cooperazione nell’ideazione e nella gestione dell’architettura. In particolare, lavorerà con gli studenti per investigare casi studio e pratiche legate alle forme di cooperazione dell’abitare.

"Abbiamo proposto la Visiting Professorship alla prof.ssa Deamer per il suo eccezionale contributo al dibattito internazionale" ha commentato Ioanni Delsante. "Queste tematiche, coerenti con le sue ricerche decennali, dimostrano un approccio interdisciplinare ma al tempo stesso si intrecciano con il dibattito sull’architettura e la città contemporanee. A questo proposito la Keynote Lecture intende offrire una panoramica storica e teorica delle condizioni sottostanti il rapporto tra architettura (e architetti) e lavoro, inteso anche come opera creativa e intellettuale. La prof.ssa Deamer, attraverso la sua opera, ha richiamato l’attenzione del dibattito su temi fino ad allora trascurati, evidenziando le carenze etiche del mondo professionale e, implicitamente, invitando all’azione (collettiva)."

I lavori architettonici di Peggy Deamer sono apparsi su «Dwell», il «New York Times», «Architectural Record» e «House and Garden», tra gli altri. È una figura di spicco nel panorama internazionale dell'architettura, con un vasto corpus di opere teoriche. Gli articoli di Deamer sono apparsi in «Assemblage», «Praxis», «Log», «Perspecta» e «Harvard Design Magazin»e, tra gli altri giornali e antologie. È l'editrice de "The Millennium House, Architecture and Capitalism: 1845 to the Present" e "The Architect as Worker: Immaterial Labor, the Creative Class, and the Politics of Design". È co-editrice di “Building in the Future: Recasting Architectural Labor", "BIM in Accademia" e " Re-Reading Perspecta". È membro fondatore della "Architecture Lobby", un gruppo che promuove il valore del design e del lavoro architettonico. La sua attuale ricerca esplora la relazione tra soggettività, progettazione e lavoro nell'economia attuale.

Dopo la lezione, una arricchente tavola rotonda sarà guidata da stimati professori dell'Università e dal Prof. Camillo Boano del Politecnico di Torino / UCL (Regno Unito). Questa sessione di tavola rotonda fornirà una importante opportunità di approfondimento e dialogo tra i partecipanti.

La Keynote Lecture è concepita come parte di AUDe Architectural Talks - 2024 Lecture Series, e supportata dal progetto Erasmus+ KA2 'SarPe', un progetto europeo di pedagogie architettoniche guidato dall'UniPv e coordinato dal Prof. Ioanni Delsante.

“Architecture and Labor: ideology” Keynote Lecture by Prof. Peggy Deamer (USA)

On March 22, 2024, the Keynote Lecture will be offered to Pavia’s University students and delivered by Prof. Peggy Deamer, who received a B.Arch. from The Cooper Union and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. She is currently an Emerita Professor at Yale University’s School of Architecture and principal in the firm of Deamer, Architects. 

Peggy Deamer has been appointed as Visiting Professor within the UniPv-USA exchange program for the academic year 2023-2024. Her teaching activity is contributing to the ‘Design Studio in Architecture and Ecologies’ module, targeting 5th-year students in the program of Building Engineering and Architecture EU, alongside Professors Carlo Berizzi and Ioanni Delsante.

The module aims to provide students with advanced skills in architectural and urban design. Professor Deamer will specifically contribute to critically investigating the experience of shared living as well as cooperatively conceived spaces for cultural and/or work production.

"We proposed the Visiting Professorship to Professor Deamer for her exceptional contributions to the international debate," commented Ioanni Delsante. "These themes, consistent with her decades-long research, demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach while intertwining with the discourse on contemporary architecture and cities. In this regard, the Keynote Lecture aims to provide a historical and theoretical overview of the underlying conditions regarding the relationship between architecture (and architects) and labor, understood also as creative and intellectual work. Through her work, Professor Deamer has drawn attention to previously overlooked themes, highlighting the ethical shortcomings of the professional world and implicitly urging collective action."

Peggy Deamer’s architecture works has appeared in «Dwell», the «New York Times»; «Architectural Record» and «House and Garden», amongst others. She is a prominent figure in the international landscape in architecture, with an extensive body of theoretical works. Articles by Deamer have appeared in «Assemblage», «Praxis», «Log», «Perspecta», and «Harvard Design Magazine», amongst others journals and anthologies. She is the editor of “The Millennium House, Architecture and Capitalism: 1845 to the Present” and “The Architect as Worker: Immaterial Labor, the Creative Class, and the Politics of Design”. She is co-editor of “Building in the Future: Recasting Architectural Labor”, “BIM in Academia”, and “Re-Reading Perspecta”. She is the founding member of the Architecture Lobby, a group advocating for the value of architectural design and labour. Her current research explores the relationship between subjectivity, design, and labour in the current economy.

Following the keynote lecture, an enriching roundtable discussion will be led by esteemed professors of the University and by Prof. Camillo Boano from Politecnico Torino / UCL (UK). This roundtable session will provide a valuable opportunity for further exploration and dialogue among the participants. 
The Keynote is being conceived as part of AUDe Architectural Talks, and supported by the Erasmus+ KA2 project ‘SarPe’, an European project of architectural pedagogies led by Unipv and coordinated by Prof. Ioanni Delsante.
